I took three days of private instruction with Loren Stump in September of 2002. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I went for it.
I had talked to Loren about motorcycle related glass works earlier in the year and had sent him pictures of my Harley-Davidson murrini. So, on the third day I was there, Loren built a two inch long motorcycle. He made the murrini for the wheels in no time at all and then started sculpting. I made the engine cylinder murrini and the seat while Loren was working on the other pieces. Sharon Peters stopped in and we both got to watch as Loren made his third attempt at adding brake and clutch cables (while some of the other parts were coming apart). It was a nerve wracking experience just watching.
The encasement went well and Loren had already prepared a slice of my Harley murrini to add to the paperweight if there was a spot for it. It fit perfectly underneath the motorcycle. Then he added a slice of his signature cane. I have no idea what time it was when he finished up, but it was already into the next day. I was completely taken by surprise when Loren told me he was going to give the paperweight to me!
So here it is. Loren Stump's Harley-Davidson paperweight. Absolutely one-of-a-kind. It is definitely not for sale.
My sincerest thanks go out to Loren Stump for his incredible generosity. I don't think there is anyone around who is willing to pass on as much of their knowledge to other people as Loren does. If you ever get the chance, sign up for one of his classes. Just be sure to bring lots of caffeinated drinks.
This paperweight is 2 3/8" in diameter.
